This time, the spotlight is on "EU Space for Defence & Security," offering innovators across Europe the opportunity to harness the power of EU Space data to address critical global security issues.

Scheduled to take place across 10 locations simultaneously, the hackathon provides an exciting platform for participants to tackle challenges involving satellite data, drones, geospatial intelligence, and more. With access to Europe’s leading space assets — Copernicus, Galileo, EGNOS, and Secure SATCOM — participants will explore cutting-edge solutions in defence and security.

CASSINI Hackathons Challenge EU’s Brightest Minds

The CASSINI Hackathons and Mentoring initiative is part of a broader effort led by the EU through its EU Space Programme to foster innovation and tackle global challenges. This series of hackathons empowers participants to harness cutting-edge European Space technologies to create impactful solutions.

Compete for Prizes and Transform Ideas into Viable Businesses

Those who take part in the hackathon will have the chance to develop solutions that could shape the future of EU defence. Furthermore, exciting rewards are offered. Winners at both the local and EU levels will receive prizes, up to €3,000, along with entry into a six-month mentoring programme that provides 100 hours of tailored, expert guidance This mentorship gives participants the opportunity to transform their ideas into viable businesses, propelling their projects to the next level.

The Hackathon Challenges: Powering Solutions for a Secure Future

The 8^th CASSINI Hackathon will feature three challenges. Each challenge taps into the extensive resources of EU Space technologies:

Challenge 1: Enhancing Defence & Security with Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT)

In a world where data security is crucial, GEOINT offers game-changing opportunities for defence and security operations. Participants will develop solutions that use space data to optimize resource allocation, predict security threats, and protect critical infrastructures. The challenge also invites ideas for enhancing Earth Observation (EO) cybersecurity and ensuring the authenticity of remote sensing data.

Challenge 2: Unmanned Drone Applications for Defence & Security Operations

Drones have the potential to revolutionize defence and security by providing real-time data, improving situational awareness, and supporting emergency response. Participants will be tasked with creating innovative applications for unmanned drones, leveraging EU Space data for everything from surveillance to disaster response. Solutions that address drone cybersecurity and data integrity are also encouraged.

Challenge 3: Orbital Security: Navigating the Collision Frontier

With the increasing number of satellites and space debris, collision avoidance has become a pressing concern. In this challenge, participants will analyse real-world satellite data and assess the risk of collisions with space debris. The goal is to improve space situational awareness and develop business models for the safe management of satellite operations.
