As the world faces unprecedented environmental challenges, millions of people continue to grapple with the effects of climate change, pollution, and resource depletion. Ensuring a sustainable future requires innovative solutions to accelerate the green transition, improve environmental infrastructure, and provide access to cleaner energy, air, and water. Understanding the urgent need for climate action will be key in paving the way towards a greener, more sustainable future. The 7th CASSINI Hackathon challenges you to develop innovative concepts and products using European space data and services from Copernicus, Galileo & EGNOS. These novel solutions should address emissions and carbon footprint reporting, support sustainable living, and contribute to climate change mitigation. Showcase your inventive spirit by developing viable solutions to support the transition to a sustainable economic system and the protection of the environment.

The CASSINI Hackathons and Mentoring, initiated by the European Union and its space programme, is a series of hackathons that tackle international challenges using European space technologies. Now in its seventh edition, this hackathon provides access to European space data, information and signals from Copernicus, Galileo and EGNOS, plus other valuable tools to help participants take on one of our three challenges. The top ideas will be awarded at both local and EU levels, and the overall winners will get the chance to win cash prizes of up to 5.000€ and enter a six-month mentoring programme that includes 100 hours of customised expert mentoring.

Here’s what to expect: If you are a rising innovator in Europe, you are invited to participate in the CASSINI Hackathon at one of our ten locations. Each hackathon location features its own unique set of experts, prizes, and additional special features. Once you select a location, it’s time for registration, team formation and ideation! Your team will choose to solve one of three challenges, all related to the theme of environment and green transition:

1.       Emissions and carbon footprint reporting: We encourage participants to dive into the areas of carbon credit fraud detection to find fraudulent abuses of emission offsets by companies and/or to build solutions to increase transparency, man-made emissions monitoring to measure greenhouse gases in the atmosphere produced by human activities and reporting & certifications to enable private companies to evaluate their CSR/ESG strategies and results.

2.       Sustainable living: We encourage participants to dive into the areas of EBDR green city indicators to provide data points about air/water/soil quality and use, resource availability, climate change risks, transport, energy, waste, etc, utilities optimization to develop new services for companies providing electricity, gas, heating, water, sewage, waste management, connectivity, etc, and policy-making support to create innovative tools for regional and municipal authorities to better manage their communities.

3.       Climate change mitigation: We encourage participants to dive into the areas of sea level and coastal erosion monitoring to enable proactive measures to protect the coast and people/companies living nearby it, resilience of communities and habitats to build capacity to react effectively to unexpected challenges posed by climate change phenomena and prevention of climate-related issues to build foresight tools that can spare or reduce the costly ex-post remedies to climate change.

Remember! No previous space experience is required! This is your chance to engage with the sector, even if it’s for the first time as the event aims to bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds. The application process couldn’t be easier: Simply choose a challenge and decide how you’ll leverage EU space technologies to enable the change you want to see in the world.
